Here at Hodgson Heating & Cooling, we understand that saving money on your energy bill is essential. Here are a few tips to ensure your heating system runs as efficiently as possible:

Change the air filter on your furnace.

You should use a high-efficiency pleated filter. If you have 1" or 2" thick filters, they should be changed at least twice yearly in the spring and fall. 3"-4" filters can be changed only once yearly in the spring.

Get a safety check for your furnace.

A safety check should include a carbon monoxide test, a thorough heat exchanger inspection, and a vent pipe check.

Service your humidifier.

Most humidifiers have a water panel or evaporator pad that should be serviced by a professional and replaced yearly.

Clean your furnace drain lines.

Furnaces that vent outside with plastic pipe have a drain line. Cleaning these drain lines can help improve operation.

Clean your return registers.

Dust can accumulate on your return registers, blocking airflow and increasing gas bills.

Continuous fan operation will help balance uneven temperatures.

Turn the fan switch on your thermostat to "ON" for continuous fan operation. Your air filter and humidifier will also work better. 

Lower the temperature to save money.

Did you know you can save on your energy bill by lowering the temperature for at least eight hours? For example, you can save up to five percent on your heating bill by lowering the temperature by five degrees every night.
